Hello Michelle,

Thank you!

I've never been to Sardinia in August but during my stay in June there were already a lot of people on the Costa Smeralda.
In August, it might be difficult to find a parking space for the most famous beaches (unless you get there early) and they are all paid parking. You may also experience traffic jams around the beaches.
On the other hand, I don't think you'll have any problems getting from the airport to the hotel by car as you arrive at 8pm.

As you said, the 2 solutions have advantages and disadvantages, but one isn't necessarily better than the other. It really depends on what you want to see.
With an organised tour, at least you don't have to worry about parking.

Enjoy your stay in Sardinia!

Hello.
Thank you for your articles they are interesting reading.
We are staying in Porto Cervo for 3 nights in August 2023 and have a free day to explore the coast and towns of Costa Smeralda.
We are considering either a) doing the Small Group Tour - Costa Smeralda Sightseeing Tour in Sardinia which visits San Pantaleo, Porto Cervo, Baia Sardinia and Arzachena, santa lucia Church.
OR b) hiring a car for a day - picking it up from the airport when we arrive at 8pm the night before then keeping it for the day - essentially doing our own driving tour of the area.

I have read that traffic at this time of year will be VERY busy and I imagine so will parking.
However having a car would provide greater exploring flexibility.
Cost wise, seems to be fairly equivalent - approx $200 AUD/day for the car plus overnight parking at tour hotel. compared to a tour of $355 total for 2pp.

What we are not sure about is whether it will be difficult to get self drive, firstly at night from the airport to Porto Cervo then the following day - in likely busy traffic etc.
Or is it not as hectic as we may be perceiving it?

Your advice, and a reality check on what the driving conditions are likely to be, pros and cons would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.
