In Sentrum District (City Center)

The Sentrum is the heart of Bergen. It encompasses the main squares, the Fish Market, and the primary shopping streets.

This is the best area to stay if you want to be close to everything.

You should stay in this district:

• For a first time stay, as you are close to all the main places to visit.
• To explore main landmarks like the Fish Market and the Fløibanen funicular.
• If you love shopping, as you will be close to Bergens’s main square: Torgallmenningen

This is the perfect area to see:

• Torget (Fish Market), the most famous market in Norway for fresh seafood.
• Torgallmenningen, the main square.
• Fløibanen Funicular, which takes you up Mount Fløyen for a nice view.

Where to Stay in Bergen City Center?

• Magic Hotel Kløverhuset: Situated in a shopping center near the harbor. Contemporary rooms from 110€. Strong points: amazing terrace views, trendy design, lively atmosphere.

• Bergen Børs Hotel: Located inside the magnificent old Stock Exchange building, right across from the Fish Market. Elegant rooms with high ceilings from 180€, breakfast included. Strong points: the exclusive restaurant, fitness center, very sophisticated atmosphere.
• Skostredet Hotel & Spa: 5-star hotel Located in a charming side street. Double rooms from 190€, breakfast included. Strong points: intimate atmosphere, high-end design, close to great restaurants.

In Bryggen District

Bryggen is the historic harbor area of Bergen, famous for its colorful wooden commercial buildings.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, this area offers a unique atmosphere that transports you back to the 16th century.

You should really stay in Bryggen if you want:

• To be immersed in history, surrounded by medieval architecture.
• A romantic setting, with charming alleyways and waterfront views.
• Easy access to boat tours, as most fjord cruises depart from here.

This district is perfect for discovering:

• The Bryggen Wharf, the iconic row of Hanseatic heritage buildings.
• The Hanseatic Museum, showcasing how merchants lived and worked.
• Bergenhus Fortress, one of the oldest and best-preserved castles in Norway.
• Mariakirken (St. Mary’s Church), the oldest remaining building in Bergen.

Here are my favorite hotels in Bryggen

• Clarion Hotel Bergen: Just behind the historic front row of Bryggen. Stylish double rooms from 180€, breakfast included. Strong points: the view from some of the rooms, modern amenities, excellent breakfast.
• Home Hotel Havnekontoret: Located in a majestic stone building on the quay. Elegant rooms from 200€, breakfast and evening meal included. Strong points: free afternoon sweets and supper, relaxation area with sauna, upscale feel. My favorite hotel for a romantic stay in Bergen!

In the Station & Nygård District

The area surrounding the Train Station and Nygård is modern and filled with culture.

Just a 10-minute walk from the harbor, it’s very convenient for travelers arriving by train or airport bus.

You can stay in this area:

• If you have an early train or flight
• For art lovers, as the major museums are located here.

Best things to see and do around Nygård:

• KODE Art Museums, housing masterpieces by Edvard Munch and others.
• Lille Lungegårdsvannet, the octagonal lake perfect for a short stroll.
• Grieghallen, the city’s major concert hall, with unique architecture.

The Best Hotels to Stay Near the Station

• Citybox Bergen City: Located 5 minutes from the station. Minimalist and functional double rooms from 95€. Strong points: self check-in, very low price, clean and modern. The best budget option near the train station.
• Zander K Hotel: Right next to the train station. Nordic design rooms from 160€, breakfast included. Strong points: organic food wine bar, gym, very modern design.
• Grand Hotel Terminus: A historic hotel opened in 1928, adjacent to the station. Classic rooms from 170€, breakfast included. Strong points: whiskey bar, large garden, classic elegance. My favorite hotel for a high-end stay near the train station!

In Nordnes District

Nordnes is a peninsula that stretches out into the harbor, offering a quiet village feel just minutes from the busy center.

With its narrow cobblestone streets and old wooden houses, it is one of the most picturesque and authentic parts of Bergen.

This district is ideal for staying in Bergen:

• To enjoy a slightly lower price that in the city center or Bryggen
• If you want peace and quiet while still being central.
• For charming walks along the water and through the park.
• To visit the Aquarium, which is located at the tip of the peninsula.

Where to stay in Nordnes

• Comfort Hotel Holberg: Located at the start of the Nordnes peninsula. Double rooms from 125€, breakfast included. Strong points: rooftop terrace, good value, close to the harbor.
• Heimen Hotel: In a historic building on a quiet street. Cozy rooms with local character from 130€, breakfast included. Strong points: waffle hour in the afternoon, wine cellar, friendly staff. My favorite in Nordnes district for its excellent value for money!
• Klosterhagen Hotel: Located in the heart of the peaceful Nordnes peninsula. Cozy double rooms from 135€, breakfast included. Strong points: delicious homemade breakfast, very quiet area, charming backyard garden.

Where to Stay in Bergen on a Budget

If you’re traveling on a budget, here are a few great hotels for a stay in Bergen without spending too much:

• Magic Hotel Bergen City Center: Located near the fish market. Modern budget rooms from 90€. Strong points: central location, clean design, easy self check-in.
• Scandic Torget Bergen: Located right across from the Fish Market. Modern double rooms from 95€, breakfast included. Strong points: unbeatable location, great breakfast buffet, harbor views. An excellent choice for a budget stay in Bergen.
• BREEZE Hotel Victoria: Located near the train station. Double rooms from 100€. Strong points: Simple but very clean, very affordable.
• Moxy Bergen: Located in the Solheimsviken business district (a short bus or tram ride from center). Fun, modern rooms from 120€. Strong points: waterfront location, cool bar, great design. You can’t get a better price for a hotel right next to the sea in Bergen!

Where to Stay in Bergen with Family

• BREEZE Hotel Victoria: Located near the train station and the cathedral. Simple family rooms from 140€. Strong points: Very central, unbeatable price for families. The best option for a family stay in Bergen without breaking the bank.

What is the best hotel in Bergen?

If you are looking for the best 5-star hotel in Bergen, I recommend you the Opus 16. It is set in a historic bank building and offers true luxury.

For a boutique hotel and more unique feel, you can also opt for the excellent Charmante Hotel.

And if you’re looking for something a little more affordable but still luxurious, you should book a night or more at Bergen Børs Hotel.
