The Sentrum is the heart of Bergen. It encompasses the main squares, the Fish Market, and the primary shopping streets.
This is the best area to stay if you want to be close to everything.
You should stay in this district:
- For a first time stay, as you are close to all the main places to visit.
- To explore main landmarks like the Fish Market and the Fløibanen funicular.
- If you love shopping, as you will be close to Bergens’s main square: Torgallmenningen
This is the perfect area to see:
- Torget (Fish Market), the most famous market in Norway for fresh seafood.
- Torgallmenningen, the main square.
- Fløibanen Funicular, which takes you up Mount Fløyen for a nice view.
Where to Stay in Bergen City Center?

Bryggen is the historic harbor area of Bergen, famous for its colorful wooden commercial buildings.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, this area offers a unique atmosphere that transports you back to the 16th century.
You should really stay in Bryggen if you want:
- To be immersed in history, surrounded by medieval architecture.
- A romantic setting, with charming alleyways and waterfront views.
- Easy access to boat tours, as most fjord cruises depart from here.
This district is perfect for discovering:
- The Bryggen Wharf, the iconic row of Hanseatic heritage buildings.
- The Hanseatic Museum, showcasing how merchants lived and worked.
- Bergenhus Fortress, one of the oldest and best-preserved castles in Norway.
- Mariakirken (St. Mary’s Church), the oldest remaining building in Bergen.

The area surrounding the Train Station and Nygård is modern and filled with culture.
Just a 10-minute walk from the harbor, it’s very convenient for travelers arriving by train or airport bus.
You can stay in this area:
- If you have an early train or flight
- For art lovers, as the major museums are located here.
Best things to see and do around Nygård:
- KODE Art Museums, housing masterpieces by Edvard Munch and others.
- Lille Lungegårdsvannet, the octagonal lake perfect for a short stroll.
- Grieghallen, the city’s major concert hall, with unique architecture.
The Best Hotels to Stay Near the Station

In Nordnes District
Nordnes is a peninsula that stretches out into the harbor, offering a quiet village feel just minutes from the busy center.
With its narrow cobblestone streets and old wooden houses, it is one of the most picturesque and authentic parts of Bergen.
This district is ideal for staying in Bergen:
- To enjoy a slightly lower price that in the city center or Bryggen
- If you want peace and quiet while still being central.
- For charming walks along the water and through the park.
- To visit the Aquarium, which is located at the tip of the peninsula.
Where to stay in Nordnes
