In Interlaken City Center (Höheweg)
The City Center is the main strip of Interlaken, connecting the West and Ost train stations.
Centered around the famous Höheweg promenade, this is the liveliest part of town.
It is the best area to stay if you want to be in the middle of the action, with easy access to shops, restaurants, and transport.
You should stay in this district:
- For a first time stay, as you are central to everything.
- If you love shopping, as this street is lined with watch shops and Swiss souvenir stores.
- To see the paragliders land directly in the park in front of your hotel.
- If you want a wide choice of restaurants within walking distance.
This is the perfect area to see:
- Höhematte Park, the large green space where you can watch paragliders land with the Jungfrau mountain in the background.
- Casino Kursaal, a beautiful historic building with gardens and a casino inside.
- Harder Kulm Funicular, located just across the river, taking you up to the “Top of Interlaken” viewing platform.
- Schlosskirche, the old monastery and castle church located near the Höhematte.
Where to Stay in Interlaken City Center?

- Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa: Located right opposite the Höhematte park. This 5-star hotel offers luxurious rooms with marble bathrooms from 500€. Strong points: the huge 5,500 m² spa with a large indoor pool, exceptional service, views of the Jungfrau. This is simply the best luxury hotel in Interlaken!
Near Interlaken Ost
The area around Interlaken Ost station is the strategic hub for mountain excursions.
This is the departure point for the trains to Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, and the Jungfraujoch.
You can stay in this area:
- If your main goal is hiking and mountain trips, as you will save time commuting to the train.
- For convenient transport links to Lake Brienz boats and trains to Lucerne.
Best things to see and do around here:
- Interlaken Ost Station, the gateway to the Swiss Alps.
- Lake Brienz boat landing, located right behind the station for turquoise water cruises.
The Best Hotels near Interlaken Ost
- Hotel Interlaken: Just 5 minutes’ walk from Ost station. Renovated rooms in a building dating back to the 14th century, from 250€. Strong points: historic charm, next to the Japanese gardens, excellent restaurant.
- Hotel Du Nord: Located at the end of Höheweg near Ost station. Classic and comfortable double rooms from 250€, breakfast included. Strong points: close to the train, bike rental available, helpful staff.
- Lindner Grand Hotel Beau Rivage: This 5-star hotel is close to the Aare river and train station. Elegant rooms with mountain views from 350€. Strong points: indoor swimming pool, sauna, gym, garden terrace. A great luxury alternative for your stay in Interlaken!
In Unterseen (The Old Town)
Unterseen is located just across the Aare river, near the Interlaken West train station.
It is technically a separate municipality but feels like the historic old town of Interlaken.
Staying in Unterseen offers a calmer atmosphere with more traditional Swiss charm compared to the busy shopping streets of the main center.
You should really stay in Unterseen if you want:
- A quieter environment, slightly away from the main tourist crowds.
- A historic vibe, with wooden chalets and the town square.
- To be close to Lake Thun boat departures.
This district is perfect to discover:
- Stadthausplatz, the charming main square of Unterseen.
- Tourismusmuseum, the museum of tourism in the Jungfrau region.
- The Aare River locks, where you can watch the water flow between the two lakes.
- Interlaken West Station, for easy train connections to Bern or boats to Thun.

- HOP Apartments & Suites: Located directly on the riverbank. Spacious rooms with balconies facing the river from 320€. Strong points: free entry to the public swimming pool nearby, peaceful location, nice view, free parking.
Near the Lake (Bönigen & Ringgenberg)
If you prefer peace, nature, and water views over shopping streets, you should head to the villages of Bönigen and Ringgenberg.
Located directly on the shores of Lake Brienz, just a 5-10 minute bus ride from Interlaken, these villages offer a traditional Swiss atmosphere.
Staying here allows you to wake up right next to the turquoise water while remaining very close to Interlaken itself.
You should stay in this area:
- If you want a room with a direct lake view.
- For the great value for money
- For a quieter stay, far from the tourist groups in the city center.
- If you have a car, as parking is often easier and cheaper here than in downtown Interlaken.
- If you enjoy swimming or lakeside walks in the evening.
This district is perfect to discover:
- Lake Brienz, for swimming, kayaking, or taking the steamer boat directly from the village docks.
- Ringgenberg Castle Church, a picturesque ruin and church tower offering a fantastic view over the lake.
- The historic wooden chalets of Bönigen, some dating back to the 16th century, showcasing traditional carpentry.
- The lakeside promenade, connecting the villages to Interlaken East.

Switzerland is expensive, but here are a few great hotels for a stay in Interlaken without spending too much:
