In the Old Town of Geneva

The Old Town district, also known as “Cité-Centre,” is the historic center of Geneva.

Bordered on one side by the Rhone and Lake Geneva, and on the other by the Arve river, it’s the most touristy and well-known district of the city.

Here, you’ll find Geneva’s main monuments, as well as numerous shops and restaurants lining the charming cobblestone streets.

The Old Town is simply the best area if you plan to visit Geneva as a tourist.

You should stay in this district:

  • As it’s an excellent starting point for exploring the city on foot
  • If you are interested in history and heritage

The district is the ideal place to discover:

  • Saint-Pierre Cathedral, a Protestant church. You can climb to the top of its tower and visit the Maccabees Chapel.
  • The Flower Clock located in the English Garden. It’s one of the most photographed spots in Geneva!
  • Place and Tower of Molard: built in the 16th century, it was part of the fortified walls of the city
  • Place du Bourg-de-Four, with its fountain and many cafes and restaurants. The facade of the Art and History Museum is superb.
  • The Art and History Museum: this is the largest museum in Geneva. The permanent exhibition is free for everyone.
  • The Rath Museum, Switzerland’s first fine arts museum
  • Maison Tavel, Geneva’s oldest private house, today turned into a museum
