The Tianhe district is the modern heart of Guangzhou and its central business district.

This area is defined by its sleek skyscrapers, luxury shopping malls, and contemporary vibe.

It’s the best area if you want to experience the city’s dynamic, international side.

You should stay in this district:

• For a first time stay, as it offers a perfect balance of modern amenities and excellent transport links to historic sites.
• To enjoy world-class shopping and international dining options.
• If you love modern architecture and a buzzing, cosmopolitan atmosphere.

This is the perfect area to see:

• Guangzhou Opera House, an architectural masterpiece designed by Zaha Hadid.
• Guangdong Museum, offering a deep dive into the region’s history, art, and culture.
• Canton Tower, although just across the river, the best views are from Tianhe.
• Huacheng Square (Flower City Square), a massive urban park surrounded by iconic buildings.
• Taikoo Hui and Grandview Mall, for high-end shopping and entertainment.

Where to Stay in Tianhe District?

Yuexiu District is the historic and cultural soul of Guangzhou, representing the old Canton.

• Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, an impressive octagonal building dedicated to the father of modern China.

In Liwan District

Liwan District is where you’ll find the charming “Old Guangzhou,” famous for its traditional Xiguan culture and architecture.

Just west of the city center, it’s the perfect area to experience a more relaxed, authentic side of the city.

• For a romantic escape, especially on the beautiful Shamian Island.

• Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street, a lively street perfect for shopping and sampling local snacks.
• Lychee Bay, a scenic area with traditional buildings and waterways.
• Qingping Market, a market known for its traditional Chinese medicinal products.

The Best Hotels to Stay in Liwan District

• White Swan Hotel: This iconic 5-star hotel is located on historic Shamian Island. It offers elegant rooms with beautiful river views, prices start at 200€, breakfast included. Strong points: an outdoor pool, many restaurants, very quiet. This is my recommendation for a luxury stay near the river.

Where to Stay in Guangzhou on a Budget

If you’re traveling on a budget, here are a few great hotels for a stay in Guangzhou without spending too much:

• Paco Hotel (Guangzhou Ouzhuang Metro Station): Situated in Yuexiu district, near the metro. Modern double room from 50€. Strong points: very helpful staff, convenient for exploring historic sites, comfortable and clean rooms.
• Paco Business Hotel (Guangzhou Tiyuxi Road Metro Station): Located in the modern Tianhe district. Clean and compact double rooms from 60€. Strong points: excellent location for shopping and dining, right next to the metro, great value for the area. This is definitely a great choice if you want to stay in Guangzhou for cheap.
• Guangzhou Ocean Hotel: A well-established hotel in Yuexiu. Double rooms from 70€, breakfast included. Strong points: some rooms have great city views, good breakfast, excellent location for accessing different parts of the city. Another great place to stay in central Guangzhou on a budget.

Where to Stay in Guangzhou with Family

• voco Guangzhou Shifu: Right on the lively Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street in Liwan. Offers family rooms from 140€. Strong points: fantastic location for exploring old Guangzhou, has an outdoor pool, and is great for soaking up the local atmosphere.
• Fraser Suites Guangzhou: Located in the modern Tianhe district. Offers spacious one or two-bedroom apartments from 160€. Strong points: rooms include kitchenettes, which is great for families, has an outdoor pool, and is close to major malls. You should really consider this place if you’re traveling to Guangzhou as a family.
• Park Hyatt Guangzhou: A 5-star luxury hotel in Tianhe with stunning city views. Family suites available from 350€. Strong points: beautiful indoor pool, exceptional service, and a very comfortable and quiet environment for families looking for a high-end stay.
