In Hoan Kiem District (The Old Quarter)

The Old Quarter is the historic and cultural heart of Hanoi.

This district is a maze of bustling streets filled with scooters, street food vendors, and traditional shops, offering a truly authentic atmosphere.

It’s the best area to stay to experience the city’s energy and explore major attractions on foot.

You should stay in this district:

  • For a first time stay
  • To explore the main landmarks easily, with most sights within walking distance.
  • If you are a foodie, with endless street food stalls and traditional restaurants.

This is the perfect area to see:

  • Hoan Kiem Lake (Lake of the Returned Sword), the scenic and spiritual heart of the city.
  • Ngoc Son Temple, a beautiful temple located on an islet in Hoan Kiem Lake.
  • Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre, for a unique traditional Vietnamese art performance.
  • St. Joseph’s Cathedral, a late 19th-century Gothic Revival church.
  • Dong Xuan Market, the largest indoor market in Hanoi.
  • Ta Hien Street, famously known as “Beer Street” for its lively nightlife.

In Ba Dinh District

Ba Dinh district, west of the Old Quarter, is the political heart of Vietnam.

This area is much quieter and more spacious, with wide, tree-lined avenues and grand government buildings.

Staying in Ba Dinh allows you to be close to major historical sites while enjoying a more peaceful environment.

You should really stay in Ba Dinh:

  • If you’re interested in history and politics, with many of the nation’s most important landmarks.
  • For a less crowded experience than the Old Quarter.

This district is perfect for discovering:

  • Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum Complex, the final resting place of Vietnam’s revolutionary leader.
  • The Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first national university.
  • The Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
  • Vietnam Military History Museum, showcasing the country’s military past.
  • The Presidential Palace, a grand colonial-era building.

Here are my favourite hotels in Ba Dinh district

Tay Ho is Hanoi’s most upscale and relaxed district, centered around the city’s largest lake.

Just a short drive from the city centre, it’s the preferred area for expats and affluent locals, offering a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle.

You should stay in Tay Ho:

  • If you want a relaxing and scenic stay away from the chaotic city centre.

Best things to see and do around Tay Ho:
