In Hiroshima City Center (Naka-ku)

The city center of Hiroshima, or Naka-ku, is the historical and cultural heart of the city.

This district is where you’ll find the most important memorial sites, as well as lively shopping streets and numerous restaurants.

It’s the best area to discover the city’s must-see attractions easily on foot.

You should stay in this district:

  • For a first-time stay, to explore all the main landmarks easily, without needing to take public transport all the time.
  • If you love shopping and dining out, with many options along Hondori Street.
  • For a culture-filled trip focused on history.

This is the perfect area to see:

  • Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, the city’s most iconic area, which includes the Peace Memorial Museum and the Children’s Peace Monument.
  • Atomic Bomb Dome, the preserved ruins of the former Industrial Promotion Hall and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
  • Hiroshima Castle, a reconstruction of the original castle that was destroyed in 1945.
  • Shukkei-en Garden, a traditional Japanese garden
  • Hondori Shopping Arcade, a covered street perfect for shopping and trying local food like okonomiyaki (Japanese cabbage pancakes).

Where to Stay in Hiroshima City Center?

  • Hilton Hiroshima: This high-end hotel is about a 15-minute walk from Peace Park. It offers refined, spacious rooms from 200€, breakfast included. Strong points: indoor pool, multiple dining options, high-quality service, and modern facilities. This is the best luxury hotel in central Hiroshima!

Around Hiroshima Station (Minami-ku)

The area around Hiroshima Station, in Minami-ku, can be a good option if you’re arriving to Hiroshima by Shinkansen (bullet train) or planning day trips.

Staying here allows you to easily access the rest of the city via the tram network and is perfect if you have an early train to catch.

You should stay near Hiroshima Station:

  • If you’re traveling by train
  • If you’re planning day trips to places like Miyajima or Okayama.
  • For a very short stay

This district is perfect for discovering:

  • MAZDA Zoom-Zoom Stadium, home of the Hiroshima Toyo Carp baseball team, is just a short walk away.
  • Ekie Shopping Center, located inside the station, with a huge variety of food and souvenir shops.
  • To take the Hiroshima Sightseeing Loop Bus (Meipuru-pu), which takes you to all the main tourist spots.

Here are my favorite hotels near Hiroshima Station

On Miyajima Island

Miyajima Island, officially named Itsukushima, is a small, sacred island just a short ferry ride from Hiroshima.

Staying overnight here offers a completely different experience. Once the day-trippers leave, the island becomes peaceful and the atmosphere is really magical!

You can stay on Miyajima Island:

  • If you want to experience the island’s serene atmosphere in the evening and early morning.
  • For a romantic getaway in a traditional Japanese inn (ryokan).
  • If you love nature and hiking, with Mount Misen offering beautiful trails and views.
  • For a unique and memorable part of your trip to Japan.

Best things to see and do on Miyajima Island:

  • Itsukushima Shrine, the famous shrine and its iconic torii gate that appears to float at high tide.
  • Mount Misen, the island’s highest peak, accessible by ropeway and hiking trails, with temples and stunning views at the top.
  • Daisho-in Temple, a beautiful Buddhist temple at the base of Mount Misen.
  • Omotesando Shopping Street, perfect for trying local delicacies like grilled oysters and Momiji Manju cakes.
  • The wild deer living on the island.

Where to Stay in Hiroshima on a Budget

If you’re traveling on a budget, here are a few great hotels for a stay in Hiroshima without spending too much:

  • Nest Hotel Hiroshima Ekimae: Located a 10-minute walk from the train station. Modern, clean double rooms from 75€. Strong points: great value, good location between the station and city center, comfortable beds.
  • APA Hotel Hiroshima-Ekimae Ohashi: Very close to Hiroshima Station. Compact but well-equipped double rooms from 85€. Strong points: public bath to relax in, excellent location for transport, very clean. This is definitely a great choice if you want to stay in Hiroshima for cheap.
