In Tromsø City Center (Sentrum)

The City Center, or Sentrum, is the main hub of Tromsø.

This compact area is where you find the main walking street, Storgata, and the majority of tour operators for Northern Lights or whale watching trips.

It is the best area if you want to be close to restaurants and activity pick-up points.

You should stay in this district:

• For a first time stay, as everything is within easy walking distance.
• To easily join guided tours, since most buses depart from the Radisson Blu or Scandic Ishavshotel nearby.
• If you love dining out, with plenty of restaurants serving Nordic cuisine.

This is the perfect area to see:

• Tromsø Cathedral, the world’s northernmost Protestant cathedral built in wood.
• The Polar Museum, which tells the story of Arctic hunting and explorers.
• Polaria, an arctic experience center with an aquarium (just a short walk south).
• Storgata, the main pedestrian street for shopping and coffee.

Where to Stay in Tromsø City Center?

A quick note: In Winter, during the northern lights observation period, hotels are on average 3-4 times much more expensive than during summer (outdoor activities season).

The prices example I give in this guide is an average between summer and winter time, just to give you a rough idea!

• Enter St. Elisabeth Hotel: Located about 15 minutes walk from the City center. Modern suites from 160€. Strong points: very quiet, swimming pool and gym. A great choice for its excellent value for money!
• Enter Skansen Hotel: A short walk from the main street. Comfortable rooms from 170€. Strong points: quiet location, good value for money, close to the Polar Museum.
• Quality Hotel Saga: Situated near the cathedral. Modern rooms from 170€, breakfast included. Strong points: afternoon waffles included, views of the mountains from upper floors, very central.
• Radisson Blu Hotel Tromsø: Located right by the harbor. Classic double rooms from 180€, breakfast included. Strong points: on-site sauna, central location for tour pick-ups, views of the Arctic Cathedral. An excellent choice for a first stay in Tromsø!

In The Harbour and Vervet District

While technically part of the center, the Harbour and Vervet areas offer a distinct waterfront vibe.

Vervet is the trendy new district built on the old shipyard, featuring modern architecture, bakeries, and cool bars.

Staying here guarantees great views of the water and the famous Tromsø Bridge.

You should really stay in the Harbour/Vervet area if you want:

• Modern facilities, as many hotels here are newer or recently renovated.
• Sea views
• To stay in the trendiest part of town.

This district is perfect to discover:

• The Tromsø Bridge, which connects the island to the mainland.
• Magic Ice Bar, for a drink in a glass made of ice.
• Vervet Bakeri, one of the best spots for cinnamon buns.
• Tromsø Havn, to watch the Hurtigruten ships dock (the Norwegian coastal ferries).

Here are my favorite hotels in the Harbour and Vervet area

• Clarion Hotel The Edge: Right on the water. Stylish, high-end rooms from 200€, breakfast included. Strong points: the rooftop Skybar, excellent breakfast, lively atmosphere. A great upscale hotel in Tromsø!
• Skaret by Vander: Close to Vervet area. Aparthotel studios from 210€. Strong points: keyless entry, modern nordic design, perfect if you prefer an apartment rather than a hotel room.
• The Dock 69.39 by Scandic: A unique concept located near the water. High-end rooms from 210€. Strong points: the exclusive feel, the rooftop, the parking, the premium design. My favorite high-end hotel in Tromsø!

Near the Airport (Langnes)

The Langnes area is where the airport is located, about 10 minutes drive from the center.

It is also a commercial hub with one of the largest shopping malls in Northern Norway.

You can stay in Langnes:

• If you have an early flight or arrive very late.
• If you are renting a car and want easy parking and quick access to the roads out of town.
• For a modern stay away from the busy city center streets.

The Best Hotels to Stay Near Tromsø Airport

• Moxy Tromsø: Located near the airport terminals. Funky, youthful double rooms from 130€. Strong points: 24/7 bar, great social spaces, mountain views from the top floor.

Where to Stay in Tromsø on a Budget

Norway is expensive, but here are a few great hotels for a stay in Tromsø without spending too much:

• Boukersen Heim: Situated in a residential district, about 1.5 km from the city center. Simple, functional rooms from 90€. Strong points: access to a shared kitchen to cook your own meals, unbeatable location, great value.
• Enter Backpack Hotel: Located just up the hill from the center. Double rooms from 95€. Strong points: shared kitchen available to save money on food, simple but functional.
• Comfort Hotel Xpress Tromsø: Right in the center. Compact, efficient rooms from 120€. Strong points: low price, clean, 24h shop in lobby. A great choice if you want to stay in Tromsø without breaking the bank!

Where to Stay in Tromsø with Family

• Enter Viking Hotel: Located in the city center. Family rooms from 200€. Strong points: very central, good price for a family room, laundry facilities available.
• TotalApartments Vervet – Gjøa: In the Vervet district. Spacious 2, 3 or 4 bedrooms apartments from 200€. Strong points: washing machine, full kitchen, multiple bedrooms available, playground nearby.
• TotalApartments Vervet Apartment Hotel: Also located in the Vervet district, from 200€ for 2 bedrooms apartments. Same as above but different building.
• Skaret by Vander: Close to the Vervet area. Apartments for 3 or 4 people from 230€. Strong points: keyless entry, modern nordic design, great for independent travelers.
• BraMy Apartments The Aurora LUX View: Located near the city center, close to Polaria. Stunning luxury apartments from 300€. Strong points: breathtaking panoramic views of the sea and mountains, private balcony, high-end modern design. The perfect choice for a high-end family stay in Tromsø!

What is the best hotel in Tromsø?

If you are looking for the best hotel in Tromsø, I recommend you the excellent The Dock 69.39 by Scandic (my personal favorite) or Clarion Hotel The Edge. Although Tromsø does not have official 5-star hotels, these 2 are the most upscale option!

If you are looking for something a little more affordable but still a great hotel, you should book a night or more at Scandic Ishavshotel.
