In Sentrum (City Center)

The city center, or Sentrum, is a mix of historical landmarks and modern architecture, offering a lively and convenient base for exploring the city.

It’s the best area if it’s your first time in Oslo and you want to be close to the main attractions, shopping streets, and a wide variety of restaurants.

You should stay in this district if you want:

  • To easily walk to most of the main sights, without relying on public transport.
  • To enjoy the vibrant nightlife, with countless bars, pubs, and clubs.
  • For a trip filled with culture and history.

This is the perfect area to see:

  • Karl Johans Gate, Oslo’s main street, filled with shops, cafes, and restaurants, leading up to the Royal Palace.
  • The Royal Palace, the official residence of the Norwegian monarch, surrounded by the beautiful Palace Park.
  • Akershus Fortress, a medieval castle and fortress offering stunning views of the Oslo Fjord.
  • Oslo Opera House, a magnificent piece of modern architecture
  • The National Museum, showcasing Norway’s largest collection of art, architecture, and design.
  • Oslo City Hall, where the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony is held each year.

In Grünerløkka District

Grünerløkka, once a working-class neighborhood, is now Oslo’s trendiest and most bohemian district.

This area is known for its independent boutiques, vintage shops and cozy cafes.

Staying in Grünerløkka offers a more local and authentic Oslo experience, while still being a short tram ride or a pleasant walk from the city center.

You should really stay in Grünerløkka if you want:

  • To experience a hip and artistic atmosphere, away from the main tourist crowds.
  • To enjoy unique shopping
  • To be surrounded by beautiful parks and the scenic Akerselva River.

This district is perfect for discovering:

  • Birkelunden Market, a Sunday flea market perfect for finding unique souvenirs and vintage treasures.
  • Mathallen Food Hall, an indoor food market with a fantastic selection of Norwegian and international cuisine.
  • The Akerselva River, with its walking paths that take you past waterfalls, old factory buildings, and lush greenery.
  • Independent shops and galleries, showcasing local designers and artists.
  • Street art, which can be found on many of the buildings throughout the district.

Here are my favorite hotels in Grünerløkka district

  • Anker Hotel: A 15-minute walk from the heart of Grünerløkka. Clean and functional double rooms from 100€, with a good breakfast buffet. Strong points: excellent value for money, a lobby bar with a garden, and close to public transport.

In Frogner District

Frogner is one of Oslo’s most elegant residential areas, known for its beautiful 19th-century architecture, upscale boutiques, and charming cafes.

It’s a quieter and more sophisticated neighborhood, yet it’s still very central and well-connected to the rest of the city.

You can stay in Frogner:

  • If you prefer a more peaceful environment.
  • For a family holiday
  • To be close to some of Oslo’s most famous museums and the beautiful Frogner Park.

Best things to see and do around Frogner:

  • Frogner Park, Oslo’s largest park, which includes the famous Vigeland Sculpture Park with over 200 sculptures by Gustav Vigeland.
  • The Vigeland Museum, dedicated to the life and work of the sculptor.
  • Bogstadveien, one of Oslo’s best shopping streets with a mix of Norwegian and international brands.
  • The Norwegian Museum of Cultural History and the Viking Ship Museum on the nearby Bygdøy peninsula.
  • Charming streets lined with beautiful old buildings.
