In the Old Port (Vieux-Port)
The Old Port (Vieux-Port) is the historic and cultural heart of Marseille.
This vibrant harbor has been the city’s center for over 2,600 years and offers a lively atmosphere with its bustling quays, daily fish market, and countless cafés.
It’s the best area to stay to easily access the main attractions.
You should stay in this district:
- For a first time stay, as it’s central to everything and offers the classic Marseille experience.
- To explore main landmarks easily, with many key sites within walking distance.
- If you love going out at night, with a huge selection of restaurants and bars along the water.
This is the perfect area to see:
- The Fish Market, held every morning on the Quai des Belges, where fishermen sell their fresh catch.
- Fort Saint-Jean and Fort Saint-Nicolas, the historic forts guarding the entrance to the harbor.
- MuCEM (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations), a stunning modern museum connected to Fort Saint-Jean.
- Le Panier, Marseille’s oldest district, with its narrow, winding streets just a short walk away.
- La Canebière, the city’s main historic avenue that runs down to the port.
- Boat trips to the Calanques or Château d’If, which depart directly from the port.
- The Ombrière, a large mirrored sunshade by Norman Foster, perfect for photos.

In Le Panier District
Le Panier is Marseille’s oldest neighborhood, located on a hillside just north of the Old Port.
This is as typically Marseillais as it gets, with its narrow winding streets, colorful buildings, and artistic, village-like atmosphere.
Staying in Le Panier lets you discover a more authentic and charming side of Marseille.
You should really stay in Le Panier:

- If you love art and unique shops, with many artisan workshops, galleries, and independent boutiques.
