In Amalfi Historic Center

The historic center of Amalfi, or Centro Storico, is the vibrant heart of the town.

This area is a maze of narrow alleys, bustling squares, and historic buildings, all leading down to the main beach and harbor.

It’s the best area to soak up the lively atmosphere and discover the main sights on foot.

You should stay in this district:

  • For a first time stay, as it’s the most convenient base for exploring.
  • To be close to the main transport links, including the ferry port and bus station.
  • If you love the buzz of restaurants, cafes, and shops right on your doorstep.

This is the perfect area to see:

  • Amalfi Cathedral (Duomo di Sant’Andrea), the town’s most iconic landmark with its impressive staircase and Arab-Norman architecture.
  • Piazza Duomo, the main square, perfect for sitting at a café and people-watching.
  • The Cloister of Paradise, a serene, Moorish-style cloister connected to the cathedral.
  • The Paper Museum (Museo della Carta), showcasing Amalfi’s historic paper-making tradition.
  • Ruga Nova Mercatorum, the main shopping street filled with local artisan shops and limoncello makers.
  • The Arsenal of the Maritime Republic, a reminder of Amalfi’s powerful past as a seafaring republic.
