In Gamla Staden (Old Town)
The historic center of Malmo, or Gamla Staden, is the heart of the city.
This area is a charming mix of cobblestone streets, historic squares, and beautiful half-timbered houses, creating an authentic atmosphere.
It’s split into two parts: Gamla Väster to the west with its quaint, older buildings, and the eastern part which is more commercial.
It’s the best area to discover the city’s must-see attractions easily.
You should stay in this district:
- For a first-time stay, as you can explore Malmo’s best places on foot.
- If you love going out at night, with plenty of restaurants, bars, and cafes.
- For a culture-filled trip.
This is the perfect area to see:
- Stortorget (Main Square), the city’s largest square, home to the historic Town Hall.
- Lilla Torg (Little Square), a square surrounded by restaurants and historic buildings, perfect for a coffee or meal.
- Malmöhus Castle, Scandinavia’s oldest Renaissance castle, which now houses several museums.
- St. Peter’s Church (Sankt Petri Kyrka), a stunning example of Brick Gothic architecture from the 14th century.
- Form/Design Center, showcasing contemporary Swedish design and architecture.
- Kungsparken (The King’s Park), a beautiful park perfect for a relaxing stroll.

In Västra Hamnen (The Western Harbour)
Västra Hamnen, a short walk from the historic center, is Malmo’s most modern and sustainable district.
This former industrial area is now a showcase of exciting architecture and green living, with a really calm and scenic atmosphere by the sea.
Staying in Västra Hamnen lets you discover a contemporary and innovative side of Malmo.
You should really stay in Västra Hamnen:
- If you enjoy seaside walks and swimming, with its long promenades and bathing spots.
- To stay in a quiet and family-friendly area.
This district is perfect for discovering:
- Turning Torso, Scandinavia’s tallest skyscraper and an iconic Malmo landmark.
- The waterfront promenade, perfect for walking, cycling, and enjoying views of the Öresund Bridge.
- Scaniaparken and Daniaparken, green spaces ideal for picnics and relaxation.
- Ribersborgs Kallbadhus, a historic open-air bathhouse nearby, offering saunas and sea dips.

In Möllevången
Möllevången is Malmo’s most multicultural district, known for its bohemian and relaxed vibe.
Just south of the city center, it’s the perfect spot to experience Malmo’s diverse culture and amazing food scene.

- Moderna Museet Malmö, a contemporary art museum located nearby.

If you’re traveling on a budget, here are a few great hotels for a stay in Malmo without spending too much:
- HOTEL N Hostel Malmö City: Located on the edge of Möllevången. Modern rooms from 60€. Strong points: clean, comfortable beds, good location between Möllevången and the center.
- Moment Hotels: Located right across from Malmö Central Station. Compact, cleverly designed double rooms from 80€. Strong points: unbeatable location, very clean, excellent price. This is definitely a great choice if you want to stay in Malmo for cheap.
- Comfort Hotel Malmö: Right next to the central station. Double rooms from 100€, breakfast included. Strong points: free gym access, great breakfast, excellent location to explore Malmo on foot. Another great place to stay in central Malmo on a budget.

Where to Stay in Malmo with Family
- Scandic Malmö City: Located between the Old Town and the canal. Modern and very spacious family rooms with kitchenettes from 150€, breakfast included. Strong points:central location, comfortable.
- The More Hotel Västra Hamnen: In the modern Western Harbour district. Family studios with kitchens from 180€. Strong points: lots of space, quiet neighborhood, close to parks and the sea. You should really consider this place if you’re traveling to Malmo as a family.
- Clarion Collection Hotel Temperance (Home Hotel Temperance): In the heart of the Old Town. Quadruple rooms from 220€. Strong points: afternoon sweets and a light evening meal are included, cozy atmosphere, great location.
