In Gamla Staden (Old Town)

The historic center of Malmo, or Gamla Staden, is the heart of the city.

This area is a charming mix of cobblestone streets, historic squares, and beautiful half-timbered houses, creating an authentic atmosphere.

It’s split into two parts: Gamla Väster to the west with its quaint, older buildings, and the eastern part which is more commercial.

It’s the best area to discover the city’s must-see attractions easily.

You should stay in this district:

• For a first-time stay, as you can explore Malmo’s best places on foot.
• If you love going out at night, with plenty of restaurants, bars, and cafes.
• For a culture-filled trip.

This is the perfect area to see:

• Stortorget (Main Square), the city’s largest square, home to the historic Town Hall.
• Lilla Torg (Little Square), a square surrounded by restaurants and historic buildings, perfect for a coffee or meal.
• Malmöhus Castle, Scandinavia’s oldest Renaissance castle, which now houses several museums.
• St. Peter’s Church (Sankt Petri Kyrka), a stunning example of Brick Gothic architecture from the 14th century.
• Form/Design Center, showcasing contemporary Swedish design and architecture.
• Kungsparken (The King’s Park), a beautiful park perfect for a relaxing stroll.

Where to Stay in Malmo’s Old Town?

• Elite Hotel Esplanade: Located right by Lilla Torg. Modern, elegantly furnished double rooms starting at 180€, breakfast included. Strong points: fantastic location, access to a fitness center, comfortable rooms. A great choice for a stylish stay in the heart of Malmo.
• MJ’s: Right in the heart of the Old Town, next to Lilla Torg. Uniquely decorated, stylish rooms starting from 200€, breakfast included. Strong points: beautiful courtyard garden, fantastic atmosphere, excellent restaurant.
• TwentySix (formerly The Duxiana): A luxury boutique hotel close to the central station. Elegant and modern rooms from 350€, breakfast included. Strong points: exceptionally comfortable beds, personalized service, calm atmosphere. My favorite hotel for a luxury stay in Malmo’s Old Town!

In Västra Hamnen (The Western Harbour)

Västra Hamnen, a short walk from the historic center, is Malmo’s most modern and sustainable district.

This former industrial area is now a showcase of exciting architecture and green living, with a really calm and scenic atmosphere by the sea.

Staying in Västra Hamnen lets you discover a contemporary and innovative side of Malmo.

You should really stay in Västra Hamnen:

• If you enjoy seaside walks and swimming, with its long promenades and bathing spots.
• To stay in a quiet and family-friendly area.

This district is perfect for discovering:

• Turning Torso, Scandinavia’s tallest skyscraper and an iconic Malmo landmark.
• The waterfront promenade, perfect for walking, cycling, and enjoying views of the Öresund Bridge.
• Scaniaparken and Daniaparken, green spaces ideal for picnics and relaxation.
• Ribersborgs Kallbadhus, a historic open-air bathhouse nearby, offering saunas and sea dips.
• Local cafes and restaurants with great views over the water.

• Clarion Hotel Malmö Live: This landmark hotel is on the edge of Västra Hamnen, next to the central station. It offers modern rooms with incredible city or sea views. From 180€, breakfast included. Strong points: sky bar with panoramic views, top-quality restaurant, concert hall on-site. This is simply one of the best hotel near Västra Hamnen!
• Story Hotel Studio Malmö: A very stylish hotel located at the waterfront in the Western Harbour. Modern double rooms from 190€, breakfast included. Strong points: stunning views from the 14th-floor sky bar, great location, modern design. A top choice for amazing views in Malmo!

In Möllevången

Möllevången is Malmo’s most multicultural district, known for its bohemian and relaxed vibe.

Just south of the city center, it’s the perfect spot to experience Malmo’s diverse culture and amazing food scene.

You can stay in Möllevången:

• If you’re a foodie who wants to explore international cuisines at affordable prices.
• For a lively holiday, with many bars and a vibrant nightlife.
• If you want a local experience.

Best things to see and do around Möllevången:

• Möllevångstorget, the main square with a bustling daily market offering fresh produce and international foods.
• Folkets Park, one of the world’s oldest public parks, with green spaces, a playground, mini-golf, and terrariums.
• The many international restaurants, offering everything from Middle Eastern to Asian cuisine.
• Independent bars and pubs, perfect for experiencing the local nightlife.
• Moderna Museet Malmö, a contemporary art museum located nearby.

The Best Hotels to Stay in Möllevången

• Quality Hotel The Mill: A large, modern hotel right next to Möllevången. Cosy double rooms from 130€. Strong points: great breakfast, private parking, well-located for exploring the city, quiet. This is my recommendation for a comfortable stay in the area!
• The More Hotel: Located in a beautifully restored old chocolate factory on the edge of Möllevången. Spacious studio apartments from 145€. Strong points: charming historic building, rooms with kitchenettes, free access to a sauna.
• Scandic Triangeln: A high-rise hotel located right above the Triangeln shopping center, next to Möllevången. Modern double rooms from 150€, breakfast included. Strong points: amazing city views from the upper floors, great location for shopping and transport, access to a gym and sauna.

Where to Stay in Malmo on a Budget

If you’re traveling on a budget, here are a few great hotels for a stay in Malmo without spending too much:

• HOTEL N Hostel Malmö City: Located on the edge of Möllevången. Modern rooms from 60€. Strong points: clean, comfortable beds, good location between Möllevången and the center.
• Moment Hotels: Located right across from Malmö Central Station. Compact, cleverly designed double rooms from 80€. Strong points: unbeatable location, very clean, excellent price. This is definitely a great choice if you want to stay in Malmo for cheap.
• Comfort Hotel Malmö: Right next to the central station. Double rooms from 100€, breakfast included. Strong points: free gym access, great breakfast, excellent location to explore Malmo on foot. Another great place to stay in central Malmo on a budget.

Where to Stay in Malmo with Family

• Scandic Malmö City: Located between the Old Town and the canal. Modern and very spacious family rooms with kitchenettes from 150€, breakfast included. Strong points:central location, comfortable.
• The More Hotel Västra Hamnen: In the modern Western Harbour district. Family studios with kitchens from 180€. Strong points: lots of space, quiet neighborhood, close to parks and the sea. You should really consider this place if you’re traveling to Malmo as a family.
• Clarion Collection Hotel Temperance (Home Hotel Temperance): In the heart of the Old Town. Quadruple rooms from 220€. Strong points: afternoon sweets and a light evening meal are included, cozy atmosphere, great location.
