In Midtown – Around Times Square

Midtown, located in the center of Manhattan, is the most central area of New York.

This district is filled with Broadway theaters, restaurants, and large skyscrapers, offering a truly energetic vibe.

Staying in Midtown lets you easily reach New York’s main attractions.

You should stay in this district:

  • For a first time stay, to explore the city’s main sights.
  • If you love going out at night, with all the Broadway shows and bars.
  • To explore all main landmarks easily on foot or by subway.

This district is perfect to discover:

  • Top of the Rock: this observation platform offers breathtaking views of New York and its surroundings.
  • The Rockefeller Center: a commercial complex consisting of nineteen buildings, housing the city’s luxury shops. You can also go up to the terrace on top of the Rockefeller.
  • The Chrysler Building: a skyscraper with a height of 319 meters.
  • St. Patrick’s Cathedral: the main church of the city’s archdiocese, built in the 19th century in a neo-Gothic style.
  • The Empire State Building: an Art Deco skyscraper standing at 381 meters tall with 102 floors.
  • Grand Central Terminal: a New York railway station located between 42nd Street and Park Avenue.
  • Times Square: Manhattan’s busiest square with its giant screens and stores such as M&M’s Store and Disney Store.

  • New York Marriott Marquis: This iconic upscale hotel is located directly on Broadway. It offers very large double rooms starting from 320€. Strong points: New York’s only revolving rooftop restaurant, perfect location for theater shows, very professional staff.
  • The Knickerbocker: This 5-star hotel is located directly on Times Square. It offers spacious, elegant rooms from 450€, breakfast included. Strong points: rooftop terrace, excellent breakfast, wonderful location. This is simply the best luxury hotel in Midtown!

Around Central Park

The areas around Central Park, including the Upper West and Upper East Sides, are more residential neighborhoods.

Unfolding around the park, it’s home to the city’s most iconic museums and classic architecture.

Staying around Central Park lets you enjoy a quieter setting, while staying close to the city center.

You should stay around Central Park:

  • For a culture-filled trip, with all the famous museums
  • If you appreciate refinement and elegance

You should stay in South of Manhattan if you want:

Where to Stay in New York on a Budget

If you’re traveling on a budget, here are a few great hotels for a stay in New York without spending too much:

  • HI New York City Hostel: Located on the Upper West Side, just blocks from Central Park. Private rooms and dorms from 80€. Strong points: huge communal kitchen, outdoor patio, very clean. This is definitely a great choice if you want to stay in New York for cheap.
  • Pod Times Square: Just 5 minutes’ walk from Times Square. Compact, very functional double rooms from 120€. Strong points: clean, unbeatable location, affordable price.
  • Moxy NYC Downtown: Located in Lower Manhattan near the 9/11 Memorial. Stylishly decorated double rooms from 140€. Strong points: very nice bar, cool room design, great location to explore South of Manhattan on foot. Another great place to stay in New York on a budget.

Where to Stay in New York with Family

  • The Fifty Sonesta Hotel New York: In Midtown East, close to Rockefeller Center. This property offers large family rooms and suites equipped with very practical kitchens starting from 170€. Strong points: incredibly spacious rooms for New York, exceptionally helpful staff, convenient central location.
  • San Carlos Hotel New York: Located in Midtown East, just a 10-minute walk from Grand Central Terminal. This hotel offers extremely spacious family suites featuring separate living areas and kitchenettes starting from 200€. Strong points: large suites perfect for accommodating families, quiet but central location, friendly staff. This is a really good choice for a family stay in New York.
  • TRYP by Wyndham New York City Times Square / South: Located in Midtown. Family room with bunk beds for 4 to 6 people from 250€. Strong points: good location, very spacious family rooms, warm welcome. You should really consider this place if you’re traveling to New York as a family.
  • Hotel Beacon: Set on the Upper West Side near Central Park. This hotel offers large family rooms with kitchenettes from 280€. Strong points: spacious, nearby supermarkets, great neighborhood vibe.
