Downtown Portland, including the historic Old Town area, is the heart of the Rose City.

This is the perfect place to stay if you want to discover some of the city’s must-see attraction on foot, enjoy great restaurants or attend the famous Portland Saturday Market.

It’s simply the best area for a first time in the city!

You should stay in this district if you want:

  • To be in the center of the action
  • To explore major landmarks and museums on foot.
  • To enjoy some of the city’s best restaurants
  • For a culture-filled trip, thanks to theaters, art galleries, and live music venues.

This is the perfect area to see:

  • Pioneer Courthouse Square, hosting events year-round.
  • Portland Art Museum

In Pearl District

Pearl District, a former industrial zone, has transformed into one of Portland’s most chic and sophisticated neighborhoods.

Known for its cobblestone streets, repurposed warehouses, art galleries, and upscale boutiques, it has a polished yet relaxed vibe.

Staying in the Pearl District puts you in a trendy, central location with some of the city’s best dining and shopping at your doorstep.

You should really stay in the Pearl District if you want:

  • An upscale and stylish experience in a very walkable area.
  • To explore art galleries and high-end boutiques.
  • To enjoy some of Portland’s finest restaurants and craft breweries.

In Nob Hill (Northwest District)

Nob Hill, also known as the Northwest District, is a charming neighborhood famous for its beautiful Victorian and Craftsman-style homes.

The area is packed with trendy boutiques, cafes and restaurants. It offers a more residential, village-like feel while still being very close to the city center.

You should stay in Nob Hill if you:

  • Want a charming, neighborhood vibe with tree-lined streets.
  • Love shopping at unique, local boutiques alongside well-known brands.
  • Enjoy being close to nature, with easy access to the large Forest Park.

Best things to see and do around Nob Hill:

  • NW 23rd Avenue, the main shopping street
  • The historic architecture
  • Forest Park, one of the largest urban forests in the United States, offering miles of hiking trails right at the edge of the neighborhood.
  • Cinema 21, and its classic movie theater facade.
  • Salt & Straw, the original location of Portland’s most famous ice cream shop, known for its unique and delicious flavors.

The Best Hotels to Stay in Nob Hill

Where to Stay in Portland on a Budget

If you’re traveling on a budget, here are a few great hotels for a stay in Portland without spending too much:

  • The Society Hotel: A beautifully restored 1881 sailors’ hotel in Old Town. Offers a range of rooms from bunk beds (45€) to private suites (starting at 100€). Strong points: incredible rooftop deck with city views, a lobby café, and a unique, historic atmosphere. Can’t beat that amazing value for money!

Where to Stay in Portland with Family

  • Embassy Suites by Hilton Portland Downtown: Located in a beautiful historic building Downtown. Spacious two-room suites from 195€, with complimentary cooked-to-order breakfast included. Strong points: an indoor swimming pool, the extra space of a suite is perfect for families, and a great central location.
  • Residence Inn by Marriott Portland Downtown/Pearl District: In a fantastic Pearl District location. Studio and one-bedroom suites with full kitchens start at 220€, breakfast included. Strong points: indoor pool and jacuzzi, kitchens in every room for preparing meals, and close to parks.
  • Inn at Northrup Station: Located in Nob Hill and already mentioned above, but the large, apartment-style suites with kitchens are really perfect for families. Family suites from 220€. Strong points: fun and vibrant decor that kids will love, lots of space to spread out, and easy access to the streetcar.
