In Mitte District

Mitte district is Berlin’s historic center.

It’s the most touristic and famous area of the German capital, with its cobbled streets and historic buildings.

Here you’ll find Berlin’s main monuments, as well as numerous shops and restaurants.

For me, Mitte is simply the best area to stay in Berlin!

I recommend this district for your stay in Berlin:

  • Because it’s the ideal spot for exploring the city on foot due to its central location
  • If you want to be close to all must-see attractions
  • If you enjoy cultural visits.

The district is the perfect place to discover:

  • The Brandenburg Gate: it’s the city’s symbol!
  • Museum Island: a complex of 5 museums located on a small island in the Spree River, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site
  • The Fernsehturm: the TV tower is the tallest building in Germany. It features an observation deck and a revolving restaurant with magnificent city views.
  • The Reichstag Palace, which houses the European parliament
  • The Holocaust Memorial, dedicated to the Jewish victims exterminated by the Nazis
  • Unter den Linder, Berlin’s most famous avenue
  • Gendarmenmarkt Square, home to two cathedrals
  • Berlin Opera House.

Strong points: perfect location for sightseeing, extensive breakfast, and peacefulness. This is my top pick in Berlin for its excellent value for money.
  • Motel One Berlin-Spittelmarkt: Located a 10-minute walk from Gendarmenmarkt Square. Pleasant and comfortable double rooms from 170€, breakfast at 16.90€. Strong points: the very cool bar, convenient location, and kind staff.
  • NH Collection Berlin Mitte am Checkpoint Charlie: Situated a 5-minute walk from the Holocaust Memorial. Spacious and bright double rooms starting at 210€, breakfast at 28€. Strong points: excellent location, varied breakfast, parking available. A great choice for your stay in the historic center of Berlin.
  • Steigenberger Hotel Am Kanzleramt: A 5-star hotel located 800 meters from Brandenburg Gate. Warm and stylish double rooms from 260€, breakfast at 33€. Strong points: the spa, quality services, the incredible breakfast. My recommendation for a romantic stay in Berlin!
  • Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin: This iconic luxury establishment stands at the base of the Brandenburg Gate. It offers stunning rooms decorated with period furniture starting at 460€, breakfast at 60€. Strong points: very attentive staff, excellent breakfast, central location. One of the most prestigious hotels in Berlin, for a dream-like stay!

In Prenzlauer Berg district

Prenzlauer Berg district is located to the northeast of the old city.

It’s a mostly residential area, known for its bohemian chic atmosphere.

You’ll find many organic and vegetarian-oriented restaurants, trendy bars, art galleries, and small independent shops.

It’s a super pleasant neighborhood with its tree-lined squares and wide streets lined with beautiful period buildings. 

This district is an ideal place to stay in Berlin:

  • For a family stay in Berlin
  • If you want peace and quiet
  • If you don’t mind taking the metro or tram to explore the must-see sights of the German capital.

Not to miss in Prenzlauer Berg:

  • Mauerpark, which means “Wall Park” because the Berlin Wall used to run right through the middle of it
  • Mauerpark flea market, which takes place every Sunday
  • The Berlin Wall Memorial and Museum, recounting the history of the wall
  • KulturBrauerei: located in a brick building, this place houses a cultural center
  • Kastanienallee, the main street of the neighborhood, lined with restaurants and vintage shops
  • Rykestraße Synagogue, the largest in Germany
  • The large Berlin Planetarium.

Where to Stay in Prenzlauer Berg District, Berlin?

In Kreuzberg District

Kreuzberg is located to the south of the historic center.

This borough is often referred to as “little Istanbul” due to the large Turkish community that has settled there, establishing many restaurants.

But Kreuzberg is also known for being the party hub of Berlin!

With its numerous bars, clubs, concert halls, and restaurants, it’s the ideal place for night outings, or even all-nighters.

You will love this district:

  • If you’re looking for an area that is very lively and festive
  • For a trip to Berlin with friends.

Must-see spots in Kreuzberg:

  • Checkpoint Charlie, the border crossing that allowed passage through the wall and across the frontier between East and West Berlin.
  • The Jewish Museum Berlin, the largest Jewish museum in Europe.
  • The Topography of Terror: a museum located on the former headquarters of the SS and Gestapo until 1945.
  • The Berlin Gallery: a museum focusing on Berlin’s art from the 19th century to present day.
  • Markthalle Neun: an indoor market where you can taste street food from around the world.

In Friedrichshain District

Friedrichshain district is located to the east of the historic center.

Just like Kreuzberg, it’s a lively neighborhood favored by young Berliners who love to party.

There, you’ll find many alternative bars and clubs, some of which are famous worldwide.

This district is an ideal place to stay in Berlin:

  • If you enjoy dancing all night long
  • To take advantage of a vibrant nightlife

Must-see spots in Friedrichshain:

  • The East Side Gallery, a standing portion of the Berlin Wall covered in street art
  • Boxhagener Platz, which hosts a flea market every Sunday
  • The beautiful neogothic Oberbaumbrücke bridge
  • The video game museum showcasing one of Europe’s largest collections of consoles, games, and related magazines.
  • The renowned clubs Berghain and RAW-Gelände.

Strong points: the professionalism of the staff, the river view, the tranquility, the rooftop. It’s the perfect hotel for a weekend in Berlin!

In Charlottenburg District

Charlottenburg district is located to the west of Berlin’s center.

It is separated from the old city by the immense Tiergarten park.

This is a fairly remote, residential, and very chic area with beautiful bourgeois buildings.

Here, you can discover the famous Charlottenburg Palace, Berlin’s largest palace and former royal summer residence. You can visit the reception halls, royal apartments, and stroll through the vast 55-hectare park.

Here is my selection of the best hotels in the Charlottenburg district of Berlin

If you’re on a tight budget, here’s a selection of affordable hotels to stay in Berlin:
