In Milan Historic Center

The historic center of Milan, or Centro Storico, is the central district of the city.

It unfolds around Piazza del Duomo and is home to the city’s main historic monuments.

Staying in this district lets you easily walk to the main attractions.

You should stay in this district:

  • For a first time stay, to explore Milan’s main sites on foot
  • To be in the center of the action, surrounded by shops, restaurants, and cafes.

This is the perfect area to see:

  • Duomo di Milano, the city’s gothic cathedral
  • Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a historic shopping gallery
  • Teatro alla Scala, the famous opera house
  • Sforzesco Castle, a medieval fortress housing several museums
  • Royal Palace of Milan, an exhibition center next to the Duomo.

Where to Stay in Milan Historic Center?

  • Hotel Regina: Located just 10 minutes on foot from the cathedral. Comfortable and quiet double rooms starting at 150€, breakfast included. Strong points: central location, friendly staff, nice breakfast. A great choice for its excellent value for money in Milan.
  • Room Mate Giulia: Right next to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Modern and very well designed double rooms from 300€, breakfast for 15€. Strong points: central location, friendly staff, comfortable beds , excellent breakfast.
  • Rosa Grand Milano: Located right behind the Duomo. Spacious and comfy double rooms from 350€, breakfast included. Strong points: very close to the cathedral, private parking, quiet rooms.
  • Château Monfort: This 5-star hotel is located a short walk from Piazza San Babila. It offers fairy-tale themed luxury rooms starting from 380€, breakfast for 30€. Strong points: indoor pool and jacuzzi, relaxing spa, exceptional breakfast. This is my recommandation for a romantic stay in Milan!
  • Park Hyatt Milano: This 5-star hotel is located just steps from the Duomo. It offers classic double rooms starting from 850€. Strong points: a spa with a jacuzzi, highly professional staff, perfect location. This is simply the best luxury hotel in Milan historic center!

In Brera and Quadrilatero della Moda

Brera and the Quadrilatero della Moda are located just north of the historic center.

Brera features cobblestone streets and art galleries, while the Quadrilatero della Moda is Milan’s high-end fashion district with designer boutiques.

Staying here lets you enjoy a sophisticated side of Milan while being close to the center.

You should really stay in this area:

  • If you’re looking for luxury shopping
  • If you are interested in art
  • If you want an upscale experience with fine dining options
  • To stay in a stylish neighborhood with a quieter atmosphere at night.

This district is perfect to discover:

  • Pinacoteca di Brera, the main public gallery for paintings in Milan
  • Via Montenapoleone, the center of the fashion district
  • Orto Botanico di Brera, a botanical garden behind the Pinacoteca
  • Piazza del Carmine, a typical square with a historic church.

Here are my favorite hotels in Brera and Quadrilatero della Moda

  • La Dimora di Brera: Located right in the center of Brera’s pedestrian streets. Fully equipped and cozy apartments starting at 190€ per night. Strong points: prime location, really nice, very clean . A great option if you prefer having your own kitchen during your stay.
  • LUMERA Stay: Located just a short walk from the Pinacoteca di Brera. Bright and modern apartments from 220€ per night. Strong points: stylish design, very clean, comfortable beds.
  • The Unique Hotel: Located on the edge of Brera, right near Sforzesco Castle. Elegant and quiet double rooms from 350€, breakfast included. Strong points: excellent personalized service, large rooms, perfect location. An excellent choice for your stay in Milan!
  • Armani Hotel Milano: This 5-star hotel is located in the Quadrilatero della Moda. Elegant double rooms from 700€, breakfast included. Strong points: large rooms, top-floor spa with a relaxation pool, high-quality restaurant.
  • Bulgari Hotel Milano: This 5-star hotel is located on a private street near Via Montenapoleone. It offers luxurious rooms from 1000€. Strong points: large indoor pool, beautiful garden, great attention to detail. This is my top recommendation for a luxury stay in Milan!

In Navigli District

Navigli is located in the southern part of Milan and is known for its canals.

The Navigli, a system of canals designed by Leonardo da Vinci himself, were used to transport goods to Milan.

It is one of the city’s most lively areas, filled with bars, restaurants, and cafes.

Staying in Navigli allows you to experience Milan’s aperitivo culture and local nightlife.

You should stay in Navigli:

  • If you want to enjoy the nightlife
  • If you love food, with many local restaurants and bars
  • To experience a different atmosphere by the water.

Best things to see and do in Navigli:

  • Naviglio Grande, the oldest canal, lined with terraces
  • Darsena, Milan’s old harbor
  • Porta Ticinese, a historic city gate surrounded by vintage shops
  • Mercatone dell’Antiquariato, a large antique market held on the last Sunday of the month.

The Best Hotels to Stay in Navigli

  • Hotel Milano Navigli: Located right by the Darsena. Modern double room from 200€, breakfast included. Strong points: great views of the canal, close to transport, comfortable beds.

Where to Stay in Milan on a Budget

If you’re traveling on a budget, here are a few great hotels for a stay in Milan without spending too much:

  • Babila Hostel & Bistrot: Located 15 minutes’ walk from the central square. Dorm bed from 55€, breakfast included. Strong points: modern design, bar on site, lovely rooftop.
  • Combo Milano: Located near the Naviglio Grande. Dorm bed from 70€ and double room from 110€, breakfast for 10€. Strong points: shared kitchen, lively courtyard, clean rooms. Another great place to stay in Milan on a budget.
  • Ostello Bello: Located 10 minutes on foot from the Duomo. Dorm bed from 70€ and double room from 120€, breakfast included. Strong points: welcoming staff, AC in sleeping room, great atmosphere. This is definitely a great choice if you want to stay in central Milan for cheap.
