The historic center of Montpellier, known as L’Écusson, is the charming heart of the city.

With its labyrinth of medieval cobblestone streets, hidden squares, and elegant mansions, it offers an authentic atmosphere.

It’s the best area to stay if you want to explore the city’s main attractions on foot and enjoy cafés.

You should stay in this district if you want:

• To discover all the major sights without needing public transport.
• To enjoy nightlife
• For a trip rich in culture and history.

This is the perfect area to see:

• Place de la Comédie, with its Opéra Comédie and the Three Graces fountain.
• Musée Fabre, an important fine art museum.
• Saint-Pierre Cathedral, a remarkable example of Southern Gothic architecture with its imposing porch.
• The Arc de Triomphe and Promenade du Peyrou, with panoramic views of the city.
• The Jardin des Plantes, the oldest botanical garden in France.
• The medieval streets like Rue de la Valfère and Rue de l’Ancien Courrier.

Where to Stay in Montpellier’s Historic Center?

In the Antigone District

The Antigone district, located a short walk east of the historic center, is an architectural masterpiece designed by Ricardo Bofill.

This area is famous for its grand-scale neoclassical buildings, wide avenues, and beautiful fountains.

Staying in Antigone offers a more modern and peaceful experience while still being very close to the city’s main attractions.

You should really stay in Antigone if you want:

• To experience a unique architectural environment
• To be in a quieter area
• Easy access to the riverbanks of the Lez for a nice walk.

This district is perfect for discovering:

• The Polygone shopping center
• The Esplanade de l’Europe, a square with stunning architecture overlooking the river Lez.
• The Hôtel de Région, another Bofill creation.
• The Piscine Olympique d’Antigone, a huge indoor swimming pool complex.
• The Médiathèque Emile Zola, a large and modern public library.
• The riverside path along the Lez, perfect for a relaxing stroll.

In the Port Marianne District

Port Marianne is Montpellier’s newest and most modern district.

It is characterized by its bold contemporary architecture, designed by world-renowned architects.

This dynamic area is full of trendy restaurants, bars and green spaces.

You can stay in Port Marianne:

• If you like modern design and architecture.
• For a less touristy experience.
• For easy access to parks like the Parc Georges Charpak and the Bassin Jacques Cœur.

Best things to see and do around Port Marianne:

• The Bassin Jacques Cœur, a lovely marina surrounded by restaurants and terraces.
• The Hôtel de Ville (City Hall), another architectural gem by Jean Nouvel.

Where to Stay in Montpellier on a Budget

If you’re traveling on a budget, here are a few great hotels for a stay in Montpellier without spending too much:

• Hotel ibis budget Montpellier Centre Millénaire: Located a bit outside the center but easily accessible by bus. Modern, functional rooms from 70€. Strong points: private parking, very affordable price, cleanliness.
• Best Western Plus Comedie Saint Roch: Located just 5 minutes from the train station and Place de la Comédie. Clean and simple double rooms from 85€. Strong points: great location, very friendly staff, excellent value for money. This is the best choice if you want to stay in central Montpellier for cheap.
• Hôtel des Arceaux: Located in a quieter neighborhood near the magnificent aqueduct. Charming double rooms from 95€, breakfast for 12€. Strong points: beautiful setting, peaceful atmosphere, lovely garden.

Where to Stay in Montpellier with Family

• Citadines Apart’hotel Montpellier Antigone: Located in the Antigone district. Modern apartments that can accommodate up to 4 people from 130€. Strong points: kitchenette, swimming pool, spacious. The best choice for a family trip to Montpellier.
• Hôtel Novotel Suites Montpellier: Located in Port Marianne. Large suites for up to 4 people from 140€. Strong points: very spacious, microwave and fridge in the room, modern and comfortable.
• Privilège Hôtel & Apparts Eurociel Centre Comédie: Close to the train station and the city center. Offers family rooms and apartments for 4-6 people from 150€. Strong points: rooftop terrace with a jacuzzi, secure parking, very well-equipped.

If you are looking for the best hotel in Montpellier for a truly luxurious stay, I highly recommend you the Hôtel Richer De Belleval.

And if you’re looking for something a little more affordable but still luxurious and charming, you should book a night or more at Hôtel Oceania Le Métropole.
