On Ortigia Island (Historic Center)

The island of Ortigia, the historical district of Syracuse, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Connected to the mainland by two bridges, it’s a maze of narrow winding streets, alleys, and beautiful Baroque piazzas.

It’s the best area to stay if you want to immerse yourself in history and be within walking distance of the city’s main attractions, restaurants, and shops.

In my opinion, it’s the perfect district for a first stay in Syracuse!

You should stay on Ortigia island if you want:

  • To be surrounded by history and culture
  • To explore the city’s main sights on foot, from ancient temples to Baroque cathedrals.
  • To enjoy the vibrant nightlife, with countless restaurants, bars, and cafes.
  • For a romantic and picturesque getaway.

This is the perfect area to see:

  • Piazza del Duomo, one of Italy‘s most beautiful squares, home to Syracuse Cathedral.
  • The Cathedral of Syracuse, built upon the ancient Greek Temple of Athena, with visible Doric columns incorporated into its walls.
  • The Fountain of Arethusa, a legendary freshwater spring with a mythological backstory.
  • The Temple of Apollo, ruins of one of the oldest Doric temples in Sicily
  • Ortigia Market, an authentic market, perfect for tasting local produce, fresh seafood, and Sicilian street food.
  • Castello Maniace, a 13th-century fortress
  • The Jewish Quarter (Giudecca), featuring very narrow streets and a rich history.

Where to Stay on Ortigia Island?

  • Hotel Posta: Conveniently located near the market and the bridges to the mainland. The rooms are clean, well-decorated, and offer a great respite from the summer heat. Double rooms from 120€. Strong points: fantastic location, clean facilities, helpful staff. A great choice for its excellent value for money in Ortigia.
  • Maecò Ortigia B&B: A small and lovely guesthouse just steps from the Piazza del Duomo. Rooms are spacious and well-appointed, starting from 150€. Strong points: central location, can arrange valet parking, charming atmosphere.

In Neapolis District (Archaeological Zone)

Neapolis district is located on the mainland part of Syracuse and is home to the city’s famed Neapolis Archaeological Park.

This area is ideal for history buffs who want to be close to some of the most significant ancient Greek and Roman ruins in Italy.

While it lacks the charm of Ortigia’s winding streets, it offers a more modern setting with many hotels providing amenities like swimming pools and easy parking.

You should really stay in Neapolis if you want:

  • To be just steps away from ancient history.
  • To find modern hotels with more amenities like pools and wellness centers.
  • Easier access and parking if you are traveling by car.
  • Cheaper on average than Ortigia

This district is perfect for discovering:

  • Neapolis Archaeological Park, to discover Syracuse’s most famous ancient landmarks.
  • The Greek Theatre, one of the largest and best-preserved in the world, still used for performances.
  • The Roman Amphitheatre, where gladiator contests once took place.
  • The Ear of Dionysius, a limestone cave famous for its unique shape and incredible acoustics.
  • Paolo Orsi Archaeological Museum
  • Catacombs of San Giovanni, a fascinating underground Christian burial site.

Here are my favorite hotels in the Neapolis district

  • Hotel Teocrito: A simple and comfortable hotel located just a short walk from the archaeological museum. Double rooms from 95€. Strong points: excellent location for sightseeing, clean rooms, good value.
  • Hotel Mercure Siracusa: This modern 4-star hotel is situated right next to the archaeological park and features a rooftop pool. Rooms from 160€. Strong points: fantastic pool and breakfast on the rooftop, great location for history lovers, clean and modern.
  • Grand Hotel Villa Politi: A historic hotel set in a stunning villa overlooking the ancient stone quarries. Rooms from 180€. Strong points: unique historic setting, beautiful views, large swimming pool. An excellent choice for a stay that combines history with relaxation!
