In the Innenstadt (Old Town)

The Innenstadt, or Old Town, is the historic and cultural heart of Innsbruck.

With its medieval buildings and the Alps as a backdrop, it’s magical.

This area is almost entirely pedestrianized and is where you’ll find the city’s most famous sights and traditional Tyrolean restaurants.

You should stay in this district if you want:

• To be in the center of everything
• To explore all the main attractions on foot
• To experience the charming, historic atmosphere of Innsbruck
• Easy access to shops, restaurants, and Christmas markets in winter.

This is the perfect area to see:

• The Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachl), adorned with 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles.
• The Hofburg Imperial Palace, a former Habsburg residence.
• The City Tower (Stadtturm), which you can climb for 360-degree views of the city and mountains.
• The Court Church (Hofkirche), with its collection of bronze statues.
• Maria-Theresien-Straße, the main shopping street with beautiful baroque architecture.

Where to Stay in Innsbruck’s Old Town?

• Basic Hotel Innsbruck: Located in a quiet side street just steps from the Golden Roof. Modern rooms from around 130€, breakfast included. Strong points: unbeatable location, very clean, great value for money.
• Hotel Innsbruck: Right on the river Inn, a 2-minute walk to the Old Town. Stylish double rooms from 180€. Strong points: two fantastic spa areas, one with an indoor pool and one with panoramic mountain views from the sauna and jacuzzi. My top pick for a first-time stay in Innsbruck!
• Hotel Maximilian – Stadthaus Penz: A chic designer hotel in the heart of the Old Town. Elegant double rooms starting at 220€, with an excellent breakfast. Strong points: beautiful modern design, superb location, very comfortable beds.
• Hotel Weisses Kreuz: A historic hotel that once hosted Mozart. Beautifully renovated rooms from 250€, breakfast included. Strong points: rich history, fantastic rooftop bar with views of the Golden Roof, exceptional staff. My favorite hotel in Innsbruck for a luxury stay!

In Mariahilf-St. Nikolaus

Located just across the Inn River from the Old Town, Mariahilf-St. Nikolaus is famous for its “colorful row” of houses along the riverbank, one of the most photographed spots in Innsbruck.

This district offers a more relaxed vibe while still being very central. 

You should really stay in Mariahilf-St. Nikolaus if you want:

• Stunning views of the Old Town and mountains
• A more residential feel while staying central
• To be close to the Nordkette cable car station for easy mountain access.

This district is perfect for discovering:

• The iconic view of the colorful houses along the Inn River.
• The Hungerburgbahn funicular station, designed by Zaha Hadid, which takes you up the Nordkette mountain.
• Pleasant walks along the riverbank.
• The Markthalle (Market Hall), just across the bridge.

Here are my favorite hotels in Mariahilf-St. Nikolaus district

• Gasthof Weisses Rössl: A traditional guesthouse with a fantastic restaurant, located right next to the river. Cozy, Tyrolean-style rooms from 140€, breakfast included. Strong points: authentic atmosphere, great food, superb location.
• Hotel Mondschein: A stylish hotel directly on the riverbank opposite the Old Town. Modern double rooms from 160€ with breakfast. Strong points: incredible views, fantastic breakfast, cool bar with a garden. A superb choice for its location and vibe!
• Hotel Grauer Bär: Located between the Old Town and Mariahilf, this hotel is a fantastic option for a romantic stay. Spacious rooms from 190€. Strong points: amazing rooftop pool and spa with panoramic views of the city and mountains, excellent breakfast buffet.

In Wilten District

Just south of the city center, beyond the Triumphal Arch, lies the trendy district of Wilten.

This area has transformed into one of Innsbruck’s coolest neighborhoods, with independent boutiques and artisan shops.

It’s a fantastic place to experience a more modern side of Innsbruck.

You should really stay in Wilten if you want:

• To experience a hip, bohemian atmosphere with great nightlife.
• To be close to the main train station (Hauptbahnhof).
• To explore unique shops and enjoy excellent local food.

This district is perfect for discovering:

• The Wilten Basilica, a rococo masterpiece.
• Wiltener Platzl, the square that is the heart of the district.
• The Bergisel Ski Jump, an architectural marvel by Zaha Hadid.
• The Grassmayr Bell Foundry, a family-run business that has been casting bells for over 400 years.
• The Tyrol Panorama Museum.

Here are my favorite hotels in Wilten district

• Hotel Zach: Located a short walk from the Triumphal Arch. Bright, modern rooms from 135€. Strong points: central but quiet location, lovely inner courtyard, great breakfast.
• NALA individuellhotel: A unique design hotel with individually decorated rooms. Rooms start from 140€. Strong points: beautiful hidden garden, each room has a unique character, small fitness room. A fantastic choice for a stylish stay on a reasonable budget!
• aDLERS Hotel Innsbruck: While technically just on the edge of Wilten, this modern high-rise offers the best views of the district and the mountains beyond. Superior rooms from 220€. Strong points: breathtaking panoramic views from every room, an incredible rooftop bar and restaurant on the 12th floor, and a spa with city views.

Where to Stay in Innsbruck on a Budget

If you’re traveling on a budget, here are a few great hotels for a stay in Innsbruck without spending too much:

• Motel One Innsbruck: Located near the main train station. Stylish and clean double rooms from 110€. Strong points: modern design, great bar, walking distance to the center. This is definitely a great choice if you want to stay in Innsbruck for cheap.
• MEININGER Hotel Innsbruck Zentrum: Situated near the Old Town. Offers both private rooms and dorm beds, with double rooms starting around 120€. Strong points: guest kitchen, game zone, central location.
