In Palermo Historic Center
The historic center of Palermo, or Centro Storico, is the heart of Sicily‘s capital.
Most of the neighborhood is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and is a lively area with a truly authentic atmosphere.
It’s the best area if you want to discover all the must-see attractions on foot: markets, palaces, churches, and lively squares.
You should stay in this district if you want:
- To be right in the heart of the city
- To explore all main landmarks easily, without needing to take public transport all the time.
- If you love going out at night, with all the Sicilian tapas bars, authentic restaurants, and trattorias.
- For a culture-filled trip.
This is the perfect area to see:
- Palermo Cathedral, the city’s most iconic monument and part of the UNESCO heritage list, famous for mixing Arab, Norman, and Baroque styles.
- Palazzo dei Normanni (Norman Palace), an impressive medieval building that hosts the famous Palatine Chapel, with its unique Byzantine mosaics.
- Quattro Canti, where the main historic avenues meet, famous for its richly decorated baroque façades.
- Ballarò Market, the perfect place to taste classic Sicilian flavors and soak up the local vibe.
- Teatro Massimo, one of Europe’s largest opera houses.
- Church of Martorana, well-known for its byzantine mosaics.
- Piazza Pretoria, famous for its Renaissance fountain, nicknamed “the square of shame” by locals.

In Borgo Vecchio District
Borgo Vecchio district, just a short walk from the historic center, is one of Palermo’s most authentic and lively areas.
This is as typically palermitan as it gets, with a really warm and friendly atmosphere.
Staying in Borgo Vecchio lets you discover a less touristy but equally charming side of Palermo.
You should really stay in Borgo Vecchio if you want:
- If you’re looking for a genuine local experience, far from the crowds.
- If you love enjoying the local nightlife, with its many small, authentic bars and restaurants packed with locals.
- To get a true immersion in Sicilian culture.
This district is perfect for discovering:
- Borgo Vecchio Market, less famous than other markets but truly authentic. It’s the ideal place to taste fresh, typically Sicilian products.
- Palermo Port, the perfect starting point for trips to the Aeolian Islands or along the Sicilian coast.
- Local trattorias, great for tasting real Sicilian cuisine at affordable prices.
- Typical alleys, where you can find charming artisan shops.
