The districts of Marina and Stampace, are the city center of Sardinia‘s capital.
It’s the best area if you want to be in the heart of the action and explore the main attractions on foot.
You should stay in this district:
- For a first time stay
- To explore all main landmarks easily, without needing to take public transport.
- If you love nightlife, with countless bars, trattorias, and restaurants.
This is the perfect area to see:
- Via Roma, the grand promenade by the port, lined with elegant arcades and shops.
- Piazza Yenne, perfect for an evening aperitivo.
- The Roman Amphitheatre, an impressive ruin carved into a hill in Stampace district.
- The Church of Sant’Eulalia in Marina, which has an underground archaeological site.
- Cagliari’s Botanical Garden
- The Church of Saint Ephisius
Where to Stay in Cagliari’s city center?

In Castello District
The Castello district is Cagliari’s ancient citadel, perched on a hill overlooking the city and the sea.
This is the most historic part of Cagliari, with a medieval atmosphere, quiet alleys, and panoramic viewpoints.
Staying in Castello means being surrounded by history in a more peaceful, residential part of the old town.
You should really stay in Castello if you want:
- To experience the historical heart of the city
- To enjoy incredible views of Cagliari and the Gulf of Angels.
- A quieter stay away from the bustling nightlife of the lower city.
This district is perfect for discovering:
- The Cathedral of Santa Maria
- Bastione di Saint Remy, a massive limestone bastion with a terrace offering the best panoramic views of the city.
- The Elephant and San Pancrazio Towers, two imposing medieval towers that once guarded the citadel.
- The National Archaeological Museum

Poetto, the Best Beach in Cagliari
Poetto is Cagliari’s main beach, a long stretch of sand just a 15-minute bus ride from the city center.
It’s the perfect spot to combine sightseeing with a relaxing beach holiday.
You can stay in Poetto:
- If you want to be right by the sea but still have easy access to the city.
- For a family holiday
- For a laid-back vacation with beach bars, restaurants, and water sports.
- If you love walking or cycling, thanks to the long promenade and bike path.
Best things to see and do around Poetto:
- Poetto Beach, famous for its length and fine sand, dotted with kiosks and beach clubs.
- The Sella del Diavolo (Devil’s Saddle), a promontory at the southern end of the beach
- Molentargius-Saline Regional Park, a nature reserve right behind the beach where you can see pink flamingos.
- Marina Piccola, the small tourist port, a great place for a walk or to start a boat trip.
